Dormant Accounts Fund Training for Carers
The following is a list of the training we are hoping to deliver for Carers through Dormant Accounts.
City & Guilds Accredited Care in the Home Training Course
This training course covers the following:- Communication & Listening Skills, Healthy Lifestyle, Safety in the Home, Basic First Aid & Emergencies, the Carer Centred Approach, Support Services for the Carer, Back Care & Safe Moving & Handling, The Person with Dementia, Terminal Illness, Bereavement & Loss, Stress Management for the Carers and Practical Care Skills. The Carer has a workbook to complete with questions to be answered based on the learning during the course. A City & Guilds Certificate and a Patient Moving and Handling Certificate are awarded on successful completion of the training.
FETAC Level 5 Practical Home Care Skills
This training course covers Communication in detail both with the person being cared for, with family members and other professionals working in the health sector. It also covers Safe Caring which looks at the risks within the home, food handling, hygiene, preventing infection and fire prevention and safety. The section on Practical Home Care Skills looks at how to provide assistance with personal care tasks, pressure area prevention and assisting in patient moving and handling. The final section looks at supports for the Carer and stress management. This course is more detailed than the City & Guilds Course and requires a little more work outside of the class by the Carer in order to achieve certification such as skills demonstrations and written assignments. However, FETAC Level 5 is essential training for any Carer who may wish to work in the care sector in the future.
Patient Moving & Handling Training
This training covers moving and handling legislation, assessing risks before moving an object or a person, the importance of flexibility, how to prepare to lift or move any load and also involves lots of practical training in moving the person being cared for without injuring the Carer. It also looks at aids that can assist in this task. This training lasts for one full day and is essential for every Carer.
Topic Specific Workshops
We aim to put on workshops on topics of interest to Carers such as basic first aid and emergencies, coping with challenging behaviour, rights and entitlements, peg feeding, continence management and many others. We invite suggestions from Carers as to what training or workshops would be most beneficial to them. We will then arrange this training to respond to carers needs locally.
Stress Management Workshops
We aim to offer a one-day group workshop for Carers which includes Stress Management Techniques and Practices that can be used by the Carers on an ongoing basis to cope with the demands of the caring role. The techniques taught can be used by the Carers for themselves or indeed can be used on the person they are caring for.
Personal Development Training through e-learning
We will be offering an accredited on-line learning personal development programme for Carers who are interested in training but may not be able to attend training in the classroom every week. Carers will form a network where they can exchange email addresses and correspond and maintain contact with each other. The online learning will challenge carers to think about themselves, their caring situation, and their plans for the future.
Carers who are interested in any of these training options should contact The Training Unit of The Carers Association in one of the following ways:-
- Send an email to the Training Unit to express an interest in the training with name, address and contact details to training@carersireland.com
- Contact the Training Unit on 057-93-22920 to express interest in registering for the training
- Download a Carer Training Registration Form. Complete it and return it to the Training Unit, The Carers Association, Market Square, Tullamore, Co. Offaly
