Stress Management Workshops for Carers

Why take part in a Stress Management Workshop?

Life is stressful - there is no doubt about that. For Family Carers though it is even more stressful than for other people as daily life is full of worries about finances, your own health, the health of the person you are caring for and whether or not you can keep on caring into the future. One of the most common requests we receive from Carers is to have some training in how to cope with the stress involved in providing care. It is for this reason that we would like to encourage as many Carers as possible to participate in the Stress Management Workshops we have organised for their benefit.

Is there anything I need to do to prepare for the day?

We are asking Carers to devote just one day to themselves. This means maybe leaving the mobile phone at home or on silent for the day so that you can take a full day out and leave the world behind. You will only experience the benefits of the day if you are willing to invest this time in yourself. Imagine having a lovely restful morning and then picking up a message at lunchtime which causes you to be concerned or to worry. This would undo all the good the morning had done. In order to help you to care for longer and to care for yourself, we are asking you to trust us and to put the supports in place at home so that you can step out of your life for just one day. You will feel rested, recharged and able to step back into your life with tools and techniques that you can use everyday to protect yourself for the future.

What do I need to bring?

Bring yourself first and most importantly, bring an open mind to learning new techniques and tools that will help you to manage stress on a daily basis. In addition, wear warm comfortable loose clothes and comfortable shoes that you can move in freely without discomfort. You might like to bring a blanket, pillow and a non-slip exercise mat or towel for the guided relaxation. Bring a hand towel and babywipes or antiseptic wipes with you to clean off oils that will be used for hand massage.

How much will it cost?

We are requesting €10 to cover refreshments, venue costs and a light lunch as the fund provides for training costs but not for teas, coffees and other food.

Are there any other costs involved?

No there are no other costs involved. However, there may be a guided relaxation CD available on the day which you might like to purchase if you found it beneficial. There is absolutely no pressure on any Carer to purchase these but some may wish to do so. These will be available at a cost of €10 approximately.

What time?

The workshops will start at 10am and will finish at about 4.30pm. We would ask that Carers attend on time for the session and allocate the full day to it as we would like to see every Carer get full benefit from the day.

Workshop Aim

The aim of the Stress Management Workshops is to provide you with the tools and techniques to practice and live with peace and well-being.

Workshop Objectives

You will gain a well rounded awareness of the effects of stress, anxiety and tension on the mind and body. You will experience powerful benefits from the training and will begin to incorporate the stress management tools and techniques into your daily life immediately.

 Benefits

·          Opportunity to meet and network with other Carers

·         Therapeutic hand massage and comfort touch offers support to you, the Carer and to your loved ones

·         Increased energy levels will be experienced by you

·          Flexibility and suppleness in the upper body is improved

·         Working through the Stress Relieving Exercise Sequence and other group activities releases muscular tension from the body

·         Anxiety and tension are reduced through techniques which turn on the relaxation response

·         A relaxed state is induced by calming the nervous system and allowing mind and body to work more effectively

·         Tools and techniques taught can be used everyday. These tools and techniques are supported by practicing them in the workshop and by supporting the use of them at home through handouts issued

Everything you learn on the day you will be able to use in your everyday life to reduce your levels of stress. You will also be taught techniques that you can use not only for yourself but you can also use on the person you are providing care to, which will enhance their life too.
