Course Aim:                            
This module is designed to equip the learner with the skills and knowledge to work effectively in a care setting. The module aims to promote good practice and respect for diversity in lifestyle, religion and culture in care work. This module is one of the mandatory modules which count towards the achievement of a Major FETAC Level 5 Award in Healthcare Support. 

Specific Learning Outcomes   

After successfully completing this module you will be able to:

  • Understand the responsibilities and entitlements of a care worker
  • Recognise the need for continuing development in care work, drawing on personal reflection and experience
  • Promote good practice and respect for diversity in the care setting
  • Understand the importance of working effectively as part of a team
  • Communicate and deal with people in ways that are consistent with the role of a carer
  • Client Confidentiality
  • Importance of client autonomy, involvement and choice
  • Safeguarding the privacy and dignity of clients
  • Care for the client’s property, including items such as money, valuables and personal belongings
  • Understanding the care needs of clients throughout their life continuum
  • Facilitate diversity of lifestyle, culture and religion for clients
  • Develop strategies for improving personal effectiveness
  • Identify personal strengths and areas for development as a care worker
  • Reflect on personal experiences in care work
  • Identify how personal beliefs and attitudes may influence work in caring
  • Working effectively as part of a team
  • Demonstrate effective interpersonal skills in care work
  • Demonstrate the uses of verbal and non- verbal communication in care setting
  • Responsibilities of the members of the health care team
  • Methods of reporting appropriate client information
  • Demonstrate reporting and record keeping skills that respect the privacy and dignity of the client
  • Identify relevant employee entitlements under current labour legislation
  • Identify the structure and function of the health care service in Ireland
