Course Aim                   
The Care in the Home course is accredited by City & Guilds  Institute. The training programme is aimed at family Carers and people working in the Caring profession. The course is aimed at giving participants a thorough basic introduction to caring skills as well as the knowledge of how to care for themselves as a key pre-requisite to caring for others.

Learning Outcomes

Learners will be able to:-

  • Develop their communication and listening skills and be able to identify the various methods of communication e.g. verbal and non-verbal communication
  • Recognise and identify the causes and effects of stress and how to manage it
  • Define the role of the Family Carer and Care Support Worker
  • Develop an awareness of legislation relating to Health & Safety
  • Recognise the procedures to be followed to ensure better health and safety in the home
  • Understand and develop their knowledge of the basic concepts of first aid and emergencies
  • Develop their knowledge of healthy living in areas such as diet, exercise, food and hygiene
  • Understand and undertake practical care skills tasks which are required to improve the quality of life for the cared for person/patient
  • Discuss the bereavement process and mechanisms to cope with it
  • Understand Dementia and how to provide support to people with Dementia
  • Appreciate the need for independence for the Cared for person through assessment of their physical and emotional needs
  • Understand the supports and services available to Family Carers/Home Respite Workers and where to access these

Assessment Criteria
There is no formal assessment on this training programme. Completion of the course workbook and participation in the practical sessions with sign off by tutors are how learning is assessed.
